Fished on the Northwest side of Houghton Lake on Saturday evening.  We fished from 7:30pm - 10:45pm and caught 9 walleyes with 4 keepers and some nice pan fish while trolling in 7 FOW.  The bite was good all evening trolling crank baits.

Good Luck...

Houghton Lake 5/2/15

Houghton Lake
First fish of the year.
Houghton Lake 10 FOW

Headed up to the lake at 5pm and fished till dark.  Warm weather is really making the fish come to life.  We started out in 11 FOW on the West side of the lake and found bait fish and pike.  We worked the area until dark and ended up with five walleye.  Best action was over the weeds in 10 FOW using inline boards with thundersticks 5 foot off the board.  Inline boards are a lot of work in pike country but they paid off on this trip.

Good Luck....

Ed & Joe Houghton Lake
Houghton Lake 11 FOW North Shore

Had a great time fishing with Ed and Joe on Friday.  We started our trip at 10am on the North shore trolling in 8 to 12 FOW.  The bite got better as the sun came out and then shut down at at noon.  We moved west and stopped along the way to jig a few areas and never hooked a fish.  At 3:00pm we started trolling and ended on the South shore at 7:00pm where we found lots of pike and bass.  Overall we had a great time fishing and scouting the lake on a beautiful day.

Houghton Lake 4/29/15

Houghton Lake

Fished Houghton Lake with the dogs on Wednesday from 9;30pm - to 1pm and had a great time.  We started out on the South shore and hooked three undersized walleye quickly  East of the boat launch in 8 FOW.  Right when the fishing got good the wind kicked in and pushed us back to the North side of the lake.  We ended up with four keepers, four undersized walleyes and a few pike in the mix.  Like opening day my best action was on natural colors.  Getting fish by moving and checking weed areas.

Good Luck.....

Houghton Lake 2/13/15

Went out on a morning trip to Houghton Lake on Friday the 13th.  Started out at 7:30am from the west launch and headed out into 12 FOW to scout around for a new fishing spot.  After three hours of looking around I found a promising area in the weeds.  The wind and weather got bad around 1pm and the bite slowed up.  I fished until 4pm and called it a day after the bite came to a complete stop.  I did not hook a walleye on my morning trip, but the time spent scouting out new areas will pay off when the weather improves.

Good Luck...

Houghton Lake

Houghton Lake 11 FOW
Slip bobber blue gill

Walleye weeds 11 FOW
Houghton Lake morning trip to the north shore weeds.  Fished NW of the middle grounds around the deeper exposed weeds Friday morning.  Used the electric motor and the spot lock function to hold outside of the weeds while fishing two slip bobber rigs and a jig.  Caught half of my fish on slip bobbers and a leech which is lots of fun and easy fishing.  Also did well jigging through and around the weeds with a weed less setup tipped with a gulp minnow.   Found a few blue gills in the weeds and well be back to find more next week.   At the launch I talked to a fishermen from Shepard that had done well on big blue gills and a few walleyes on the north shore.

Good Luck...

Houghton Lake 7/6/13

Houghton Lake 11 FOW in the weeds.
Houghton Lake 7/6/13:  The busy holiday weekend created lots of chopped floating weeds which made trolling impossible.  We changed up our fishing plan and fished the South Shore from Lymans East in 10 to 13 FOW in the weeds.  We hooked the most fish on weed less leach rigs pulled close to the bottom.  Hooked three keeper walleyes and two small fish on Saturday evening.
We took the kids to the UP before the holiday for a long weekend of  camping and walleye fishing.  The UP has wonderful lakes that produce great fishing for Pike and walleye.  We camped at the South Manistique rustic campground and fished Big and Little Manistique Lakes and them moved to Autrain Lake Campground on Sunday to fish Autrian Lake.

Big Manistique Lake 6/28/13: We had two boats in our party fishing all day on Friday and we never hooked a walleye.  We looked deep, shallow and everywhere in between and couldn't make contact with the walleyes.  The perch fishermen were doing ok on the West end of the lake fishing in 12 to 15 FOW.

South Manistique Lake
South Manistique Lake 6/29/13: Changed lakes after getting shutout on Friday.  We found good fishing action on the West shore in Wolf Bay South. We hooked fish jigging early then switched to trolling in the afternoon.  Trolled in 10 to 14 FOW running crank baits over the weeds.  Hooked 12 keeper walleyes and lots of pike and bass.

Autrain Lake 7/1/13: The Mayfly hatch was in full swing when we hit the water on Sunday afternoon.  We drifted the West shore to the South and caught a few nice pike.  At 7pm we moved to the north and trolled from the river to the beach in 9 to 12 FOW and hooked 6 walleyes.  The best bite was on Rapala Scatter Rap Minnow any color.

Houghton Lake Fishing Report 6/21/13

Beautiful Houghton Lake
Fished Houghton Lake from 7pm - 11pm on Friday.  The SW wind limited our fishing areas and kept us on the south shore.  We started out fishing in front of the Limberlost and trolled to the East in 8 to 12 FOW.  The action was ok at best and we netted lots of pike and a few small walleye.  At dark we moved to the Heights shoreline and fished in 8 to 10 FOW just outside of the weeds and hooked three keepers and lots of 14 inch fish.  The night bite was very good and we found fish from the bottom up to 3 foot below the surface.

Good Luck....

Houghton Lake 6/7/13

Trolling the North Shore with the Minn Kota Terrova
Rapala Scatter Rap 10 FOW
North Shore Walleye

We launched out the North boat launch at 5am this morning hoping to get a few hours of fishing in before the wind picked up.  Our first trolling areas was in 8 FOW along the shoreline heading out to the East Bay.  The area was missing all of the weed cover that normally holds a few walleyes, so we didn't spend a lot of time searching the area.  At 6:30am we moved out into 10 to 13 FOW and marked fish suspended at 8 foot.  We setup to troll and hooked seven walleyes by 9am.  All of the fish were caught on the new Rapala Scatter Rap minnow bait trolled at 2 mph.

Todays trip we found the fish were hanging in 10 to 13 FOW suspended over the weeds.  We are finding that the weed areas have changed, some are gone and areas we could never troll have thinned out.  These weed cover changes will make for some new fishing opportunities and will shutdown some of our old favorite shallow water spots.   Water temp on the North Shore this morning was a cool 61F today.

10:20pm 8FOW West Shore
Small fish
First Walleye of the night.
Rapala Scatter Rap

The Houghton Lake walleye bite was back to normal on Friday night.  We started our trip on the South shore at 7:45pm trolling in 7 FOW.  The pike were active and on our first pass we hooked six pike and a ton of floating weeds that the NW wind had blown in.  We moved West and fished with the wind until we hooked our first walleye in 8 FOW.  From 9pm to 11pm we hooked sixteen undersized walleye and three keepers.  The best bite was on gold and black scatter rap minnow trolled back 55 foot.

Houghton Lake 5/5/13

17 inch walleye 7 FOW North Shore

Opening day of walleye season started out with great weather and cold water.  We fished from noon till 10:00pm and never hooked a walleye.  The last time we had a shutout on the opener was back in 2007. At the launch we met up with Joe and his crew that had done well fishing up on the north shore by the cut river and Jason and his partner hooked two 17 inch fish on the south shore.

On our second trip Sunday (5/5) we found good action on the north shore in 7 FOW in the weeds.  Trolling 1.8 to 2mph we hook a lot of pike and one walleye.  We only had three hours to fish and found the walleyes right when we had to go.

Good luck..

Houghton Lake Fishing Report 8/24/12

13.5 inch HL Crappy Caught Trolling on
the North Shore

After a very busy month at work Mark and I finally made it back to Houghton Lake fishing.  We headed out of the North DNR launch at 8:45am and targeted fish in 8 to 12 FOW.  The first half of the morning we trolled around our fishing areas without much luck.  Trolling produced a few pike and two nice crappy down around 8 foot in 10 FOW.  At noon we took a trip across the lake to the South shore to get out of the wind and do some casting.  The South shore report was slow and by 2pm we called it a day.  Overall we hooked some nice pan fish while walleye fishing.  No walleye on this trip, but a great morning on the lake.  The best action this year has been close to weed cover in 8 to 12 FOW.
