Houghton Lake 7/1/11

Jig tipped with a Gulp minnow 10 FOW

Fished Houghton Lake on Friday morning.  We started out trolling in 7 FOW, but got shutdown by the floating weeds.  After we packed up we moved to the East and fished in 10 FOW with jigs and Berkley Gulp minnows.  We hooked two undersized walleye and one keeper in 2 hours of fishing.  At noon we moved into the East Bay to get out of the wind and try fishing along the drop off with out any luck.  Our last stop was the weed bed just East of the Limber lost in 10 FOW where we hooked two keeper walleye and one pike.  The water temp held at 67 F and the floating weeds were a pain to work around.

Good Luck...

Houghton Lake Fishing Report 6/17/11

North Shore Walleye 11 FOW

North Shore 12.5 FOW

East Bay undersize walleye

South Shore Sunfish
Had lots of fun fishing Houghton Lake today.  Mark and I started our morning out trolling in 8 FOW on the West shore and quickly realized that the chopped up floating weeds that covered the lake were going to make trolling very difficult.  We packed up our trolling gear at 8am and made the best of a bad weed day by doing some traveling around the lake jigging and bobber fishing.  The best action was on the North shore in 12 FOW jigging around the weed clumps.  We used gold jig heads tipped with Gulp, plastic, and leaches.  Overall we hooked 7 walleyes and lots of pan fish.  If your heading to Houghton this weekend the water is holding at 70 F and you will find lots of dead mayflies and weeds on the surface.

Good Luck...

Houghton Lake Opening Day 4/30/11

Another great Houghton Lake walleye opener.  We had a great time trolling with the wind and working all of our favorite early season walleye spots. My nephew and I started fishing on the South side just east of the elks club trolling our normal setup.  At 9:50am we hooked our first 19-inch walleye of the open water season on a white thunder stick trolled back 18 foot at 2.35mph.   We continued west and hooked our second fish in 5.5 FOW with the same white thunderstick.  The action slowed up till a little after 11am when we found a nice school of fish in 4 FOW on the sand in front of the Heights Marina.  We basically trolled off of the sand starting in 3 FOW and pulled our baits over the break into the waiting walleyes in 5 FOW.  Overall we hooked six fish and kept four.   We then moved back South to get out of the wind and hooked three more keeper walleyes by 3pm.   With nine keeper walleyes in the boat and hunger setting in we decided it was time to head home and deep fry our catch.

The best colors for the day were all white and gold and black.  Speed was 2 to 2.5 and I know it seems fast for 48 to 50 F water, but it was working today.  Area to fish tomorrow is just south of the Heights Marina on the break 5 - 7 FOW.

Boat Launch Reports:
We talked to a few guys at the dock and the action was slow for jigging with most guys getting one.  The Hannson boat hooked 8 walleyes trolling shallow and we met Joe who had a slow day, but said he normally limits on each trip to HL.

Good Luck...

Houghton Lake Walleye Report 4-24-10 "Opening Day"

The weather could have been better, but the fishing was just fine on Houghton Lake for the start of the 2010 walleye season. I started the season this year on my own and opted to fish the setup on the South shore to use the East wind to guide the boat. Got setup by 9:00am and had my first legal walleye on a blue and silver TD 5 taildancer at 9:30am. The best action was on smaller minnow baits (shadraps, minnow raps, taildancers) tolled back 57 ft in 4 to 7 FOW. I took lunch at 1:00pm and picked up my fishing partners for the afternoon. We spent three hours testing a few new fishing areas without much luck and at 6:00pm we headed back to the South shore. Overall we caught 10 keeper walleyes the best being 19.5-inches and put back 4 undersized fish. The pike action was nonstop and we boated what seemed like a million hammer handles.
Had fishing friends on the West shore pull a three man limit by 2:20pm and friends on the North Shore boated 6 walleyes before dark fishing in 7 FOW tolling bombers 70 ft back.

Budd Lake Report: Old Joe and Jim picked up a nice 24-inch walleye jigging on the East shore at 7:45am.
Good Luck…..

Bad Weather Conditions

Cold temperatures and high winds keep us from fishing the Saginaw Bay Saturday morning. We made the best of the bad weather and went out scouting our deer hunting areas. The scouting trip started out great when we found an antler with five points our first thirty minutes in the woods. The buck that dropped this antler will be fun to hunt this fall. As we made our way around the hunting area we found a new bottleneck and eighty-one mushrooms.

Last Ice Fishing Trip

Spring is here to stay so that means this is my last ice fishing trip for the year. With all of the warm weather my thoughts have been turned to getting my boat ready for the early walleye action. In the next few weeks I’m going to be down jig for monster walleyes on the Detroit River and then I’ll head to the mouth of the Saginaw River to troll for walleyes.

Pratt Lake

Fished Pratt from 5:00pm - 7:30pm and ended up with 14 sunfish and no walleyes.  I did hook a nice bass on a tip up and lost a pike.   I spotted two walleye on my camera both in 10 FOW, but couldn't make get them to hit my bait.

Pratt Lake Pan Fish

While I was scouting for walleyes I found a school of sunfish in 10 FOW on the South shore and ended up with 14 fish all caught on waxworms.

2010 Spring Walleye Opener Just Around The Corner

2009 was a great open water fishing season for us on Houghton Lake.  We had great action on about every trip and most of the time we caught our limit.  With only two weeks left of winter walleye fishing were gearing up for the 2010 April opener.  Early on we will be focused on fishing in 5 to 6 FOW on both the north and south shores.  You have to love the walleyes on Houghton Lake.  Good Luck...
