You will find that May is a great time to target shallow water walleyes on HL. We normally start looking for May walleyes in 5 to 7 FOW and target areas that have bait fish. Over the years we have found that the key to catching HL walleyes is not so much dependent on the structure, but the bait fish school. When you find the bait you will find a lot of walleyes following them. We will target the sandy flats on the North shore first. One of the key factors that can change our fishing location on HL in the spring is the driving wind, so plan to be flexible in your fishing technique. You should be ready to long line troll, cast cranks, and jig. We mainly cast cranks and troll when looking for walleyes. This gives us the ability to cover a lot of water while searching for fish and learn more about the lake. Some of our favorite crank baits for HL are Rapala Taildancers, Thunderstick, and for shallow water we love the Bombers.
