Big Manistique Lake, Curtis 7-27-08

Big Manistique Lake walleye fishing is slow this time of the year, but if you can find structure you will normally find some very nice perch. Team members fished Big Manistique last week and produced several limits of 12" to 14" perch fishing in 10 FOW using perch rigs and minnows.

Houghton Lake 7-25-08

Another excellent fishing morning on Houghton Lake. We started fishing at 8:00am and had our walleye limit at 11:10am. Not may fishermen out on the lake this morning. The majority of the fishing pressure is out in front of the Limber Lost.

We'll be back out fishing Sunday morning and I'll report back.

Houghton Lake 7-24-08

Another beautiful night of fishing on Houghon Lake. I got out of work early and was able to make a quick trip up to Houghton with my niece and two nephews to do some walleye scouting.

We headed out just south of the area where we have been producing walleyes and setup to troll in 5 FOW using our normal setup. After fishing for about ten minutes we had a double header with two 14" walleyes which good the kids attention and kept them focused on fishing most of the night. Tonights weather conditions were great and the slight West wind created a perfect walleye chop.

Over all we boated eleven walleyes six of which we kept. Four pike, four small mouths and one small perch. Fishing pressure was zero out in the lake, but closer to the Limber Lost the boats are piled up in 10 FOW. The main fishing method in that area is jigging the weed beds and working the 8' to 12' ledge. My suggestion to anyone fishing Houghton is to find structure the is not a weed bed. The lake is full of drops and sand bars that hold fish year round, you just have to go find them. The best part is that most of the time you will be fishing in less then 7 FOW. Houghton Lake 7-19-08

The walleye fishing fun never ends on beautiful Houghton Lake and Saturday morning was about as good as it gets. We started trolling at 7:00am and had our four person walleye limit by 1:00pm.

We fished in 6 FOW most of the morning and then found a very hot spot in 4.8 FOW that added the last six fish to our limit. Overall we landed 46 walleyes, 12 pike, and 15 bass.

Trolling Houghton can be extremely difficult do to the weed cover, but if you use your GPS and map out slots you can really have fun. We are trolling with 8lb line, trail dancers, thunderstick of varying color and running at 2.25 to 2.60 mph.

Hougthon Lake 7-18-08

The best action yet! Houghton Lake was on FIRE this morning. We setup and started trolling at 7:00am and we had our fifteen fish limit at 10:25am.

We fished the "Devils Ledge" which is a 4.5 foot break in the middle of the lake that's surrounded by 8 FOW on both sides. We trolled with the normal HL walleye smasher (tail dancers and storm thundersticks) for three hours of fun fish fighting action. The one change to our normal setup was the addition of speed to the troll 2.5 to 2.75 mph.

Our best fish was 20" and the rest were all 15 to 16 inch fish. The impressive part of the fishing trip was we boated 36 total walleyes.
We also had three double headers, two triple headers, and one streak where we had six walleye on at one time.

Houghton Lake Walleye 7-3-08

We made it back on Houghton Lake and had a good night of fishing. The weather was good and the wind was normal.

We boated three walleyes in 6 FOW trolling with tail dancers and storms. We'll be back on Sunday and hopefully we will find the big fish.

Fishing Report 7-1-08

Pratt & Houghton Lake Report:

Fishing has been very good on both Pratt and Hougthon Lake. I've been fishing on Pratt Lake three time in the last two weeks and the bass has been great. Both sides of the lake have good fishing, but the best action has been on the West side of the lake in 17 FOW. We are fishing with Berkly Gulp leaches and slip weights and the method has produced some very nice bass.

Houghton Lake has been hard to fish with all of the crazy wind and weather we have been getting. Our last two times out we boated five walleyes and fifteen small mouth bass. We are fishing on the north side of Hougthon in 9 FOW.

Houghton Lake Walleye 6-11-08

Houghton Lake walleye fishing continues to produce. We have been working an area 1.5 miles out of the south launch in 6 FOW that is holding a lot of fish.

The track we are fishing is about 3/4 of a mile long and has 12 to 14 FOW on each side of the narrow strip. Currently we are trolling the shallow bar and picking up fish on all along the way.

White storms run back 20 ft and blue and silver taildancers 37 foot back are still the top producers. On our next trip out I'll post a few way points to get the walleye location pin pointed. The bad thing this year has been that we cannot get a normal day to fish. The wind and rain have made everyday fishing on Houghton Lake a real challenge.



PRATT LAKE Fishing Report:
Pratt is one of my favorite winter walleye lakes. Today my nephew and I made a trip out to Pratt in the middle of the day to practice our bass fishing technique. The boat traffic was bad and the day was warm, so we started out fishing the south sore in 15 FOW and had great success. We ended up landing three walleye one which was 25-inches and we limited out on bass. Along with the action we picked up nine very respectable blue gills. All of our fish were caught on leaches fished behind slip rigs with no spinners.

Houghton lake Walleye Report 6/7/08

Walleyes fishing is still very productive on Houghton Lake. Saturday evening we setup to explore some new areas in the middle of the lake and ended up boating nine walleyes despite the extreme South wind. We fished in seven to nine foot of water and trollled storm thundersticks and tail dancers. This year we have been producing a majority of our walleyes on white storms and blue / silver taildancers.

Budd Lake Report:

We have been fishing Budd Lake to get ready for the annual fishing tournament on June 21st. I've been out two times now and I have to say that the bass fishing has been great. I'll let you know if we find the Budd Lake walleye school.

Houghton Lake Walleye Report 6/3/08

Made it out fishing on Tuesday night. Had a strong NE wind, so I was forced to fish the East bay the whole evening.

Trolled tail dancers and thundersticks until I found a school of walleyes. After locating the fish I setup with my electric motor and casted crank baits for the remainder of the night.

Fishing was slow, but I ended up boating three walleyes with the best fish being 17-inches.

2008 Upper Peninsula Walleye Fishing Trip

Our fishing team headed up to Curtis, Michigan on May 19th for a week of walleye fishing on Big Manistique Lake and one day of fishing Autrain Lake.

The weather was colder then normal and the North wind never stopped blowing. Water temps were below normal and ranged from 50 - 54 degrees F everyday. All fishing methods produced fish, but the bite was slow. Best walleye of the week was 25 1/2 inches caught on a blue and silver tail dancer trolled back 55 feet on 8 pound. Total trip we landed 39 walleyes and 4 small mouth 3 lbs +. We had very our best success with blue and silver tail dancers and bomber. The other hot color was brown / red on Storm Jr. Thundersticks.

As always we had a great week fishing Big Manistique and our stay at the Buck Horn Resort was great.
